Wereldoorlog op Schiermonnikoog | The islander children created poems and
drawings with the theme 'War and Peace'. All these works of art are on display in the 'solidarity route’ across
the island. Also a number of large pictures on sites that are typical of the
history of World War II on Schiermonnikoog

heavy bombs fall on houses along the Langestreek ('Long Zone'). July 28, 1943 another bombardment on the island,
hitting two places along the Badweg (‘Sea Bath Road’) and the Middenstreek
(‘Middle Zone’). They kill a total of 12 islanders. Extra bitter is the fact
that those bombs are American and British from Allied war planes, packed with
explosives to shed over Germany. Sometimes intercepted by German fighters, it's
important to get rid of their heavy load in great haste and become faster and
more agile. They are instructed to drop the bombs once flying over open sea. So
happens, that leaving behind the Groningen and Frisian coast, some pilots think
to be above the North Sea. However, they are located over the Wadden Sea. Then
they give command to open the bomb shutters, with disastrous consequences for
the population of Schiermonnikoog

before the war starts for The Netherlands, on Schiermonnikoog there are already
three deaths to deplore. The
Germans are laying a lot of sea mines, including highly dangerous contact mines
at the entrances to German seaports in order to prevent access for allied ships
and submarines. Unfortunately, it happens regularly that the explosives become
detached from their anchor and wash up on the sands. Three islander
beachcombers think to have found an exceptional type of buoy and the copper to
the object will bring quite some money. At home they dismantle the copper,
whereupon the contact mine explodes and kills the three young men. Another
finder of a contact mine can be warned in time. During the occupation, the
Germans install poles which exhibit a disassembled contact mine as a warning:
'These are very dangerous mines - Stay off - Life-threatening'. On the
black-and-white photograph you see the warning pole situated at the end of Sea
Bath Road near to Sands Hotel Noderstraun

‘luistertoren’, radarapparatuur waarmee men over grote afstand

flak-artillery, as part of the 'Batterie Stellung' (Battery Position) from the
German Navy. Flak
stands for ‘Flugzeug Abwehr Kanone’ (Aircraft Defence Cannon). The occupying
forces use the cannons for firing ships and Allied aircraft. Complemented by
lighter anti-aircraft guns, there also have been large searchlights and a
'listening ear', radar equipment which has successfully absorb long-distance
airplane sounds and pinpoint targets at sea. During the war, the Batterie
Stellung is in close contact with the further away 'Radar Stellung Schlei'.

‘Schlei’ is the code name and also the German word for the species ‘tench’. In May 1942 starts a group of 100 workers with the construction of the complex under leadership of the Luftwaffe Bauleiting. At the end of 1942, the ‘Luftwaffe Nachrichtenanlage Schlei’ (Air Force message attachment) is operational. The position also serves as a village inhabited by 200 of the 600 German soldiers stationed on Schiermonnikoog. The Stellung is complete with living barracks, bath and toilet House, kitchen, canteen and recreation room with cinema. From the air, the position is barely visible by camouflage painting and camouflage nets, whereby bunkers are hidden under dune sand. In order to ensure secrecy, it’s for the men forbidden to have contact with the Schiermonnikoger population. Conversely, the heavily guarded military Stellung Schlei is strictly prohibited for islander citizens as ‘Sperrgebied’. The at that time ultramodern radar and listening post, locates Allied aircraft from England and reports flight data to Flak positions and the Frisian 'Leeuwarden Air Base'. There German hunters take off to prevent Allied bombers dropping their explosives on German cities, factories and oil refineries. The nightly Allied bombardments are becoming more numerous by the end of the war, to force Nazi Germany to surrender

alle Nederlandse Waddeneilanden | After the liberation in 1945, the Schlei
buildings of wood and stone are broken down. Most of the dozens of large and
smaller bunkers, however, are still hidden under dune sand. The profound war
changes in the original dune area, are still visible today as an unnatural
relief. The photo shows the entrance to the power-emergency bunker, which has
supplied electricity to the ‘Radarstellung Schlei’. Like the ammunition bunker

of peace and opened to the public in 2015. An action of the ‘Bunker Museum

onneembare vesting genaamd ‘Atlantikwall’.
nationaal erfgoed en deels Rijksmonument | Since it is not possible to defeat
England in 1940-41, the German aggressor focuses on the east. To avoid the
possibility of a two-front war, they create an impregnable fortress of west
Europe called 'Atlantikwall'. The construction of the strong line of Defense
lasts until the year 1944, as building material becomes scarce. It is an
enterprise of enormous size and eventually the Atlantic Wall stretches over
2,500 kilometers. Starting from the Spanish border, it runs along France,
Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark and Norway, all the way to the North Cape.
There arise 23,000 fortifications, including over 2000 heavy bunkers in The
Netherlands out of a total of 14,000 units. The line consists of independent
coherent ensembles of larger and smaller units, that support each other and
jointly defend the coast. Among the reinforcements is the so called ‘Freie
Küste’, the free coast with less priority. It is less heavily constructed with
defenses. From late 1943 in command of General Erwin Rommel, the fortifications
are extended with obstacles and minefields on the beach. Today, there are still
traces to find of ‘the largest line of defense in world history’. In the
Netherlands they are considered national heritage and partly monument
